Fanas sits above the Prättigau on the south flank of the Sassauna (2,308 m) and is a well-known spring starting point for cross-country flights, with excellent thermals. Mountain-flying experience is needed.
A cable car runs year-round from the valley station (920 m) to about 1,700 m, with free parking below. Cabins are small, so book ahead by phone, especially on fine weekends.
The Eggli (1,695 m) by the top station suits SE to SW wind, and the Höreli (about 1,800 m) suits south or north wind. For more height, hike up to the Sassauna (2,307 m). Land at Grüsch on short-mown meadows.
From April to August the valley wind can reach 40 km/h and turn dangerous; the launches are too low for thermals then anyway. Spring brings strong thermals, and summer suits soaring with a landing right in Fanas.
The gully below the Höreli north launch is a wildlife refuge until late spring, to be overflown only above the ridge. Alpine huts and some meadows are private property; take your rubbish back down with you.
Fanas is flown all year, with no cable-car off-season. Spring is the main cross-country season, summer suits soaring, and winter launches often face north.

Interessantes Gelände oberhalb von Fanas. Ist schon früh im Jahr thermisch aktiv, wenn der erste Schnee an den Südhängen abgetaut ist. Mit Seilbahn von Fanas zum Startplatz (10 Minuten von der Bergstation). Die Bergbahn hat nur eine geringe Kapazität - vorherige Anmeldung empfehlenswert. Auffahrt kostet 16 Franken (Stand: Jan. 2011). Start oberhalb Bergstation Richtung Süden oder häufig im Winter auf der Rippe nach Norden. Landung im Talgrund (Windsack vorhanden). Für Walk & Fly Fans: Man kann auch noch weiter zum Sasauna Gipfel hochlaufen, was noch mehr Höhenmeter bringt.
