The Gaisberg is Salzburg's city mountain, with four launch meadows around the summit transmitter and landing fields at Guggenthal and Aigen. It lies in the airport's control zone, so flying is only allowed in a specially activated TRA.
The Gaisberg road is open all year; bus 151 from Salzburg runs to the Guggenthal landing field and on to the summit. Free parking is at Guggenthal or, in south wind, Aigen's St. Virgil centre.
The north launch (1,275 m, W–N) is the main one; the west launch (1,275 m, S–NNW) is wide and flat. The east (1,280 m, NE) and south (1,255 m, SE) launches are short and more demanding, for practised pilots only, with no top-landing. Main landing is Guggenthal.
From about 15 km/h you can often soar until sunset, up to 1,500 m; thermal days often reach above 2,000 m, with house thermals on the south-west, north-west and north-east ridges. Midday can get turbulent, and Guggenthal channels lee turbulence in west or east wind.
Flying is only allowed while the TRA Gaisberg (to 1,527 m MSL) or TRA Schwarzenberg (to 2,134 m MSL) is active; check the club website, Telegram or ATIS before flying, and land by ECET. You need a licence, insurance and a club ticket; infringements can cost up to 22,000 euros.
The Gaisberg is flown all year, with the strongest thermals in spring and early summer. Stay away from the Nockstein, especially in winter and during the May–July breeding season.
Das Gipfelplateau des Gaisbergs ist über die Gaisbergstraße das ganze Jahr hindurch bequem mit dem Auto oder 6 Mal täglich mit dem Gaisbergbus zu erreichen. Es beherbergt rund um die weit sichtbare Antenne 3 herrliche Naturstartplätze in Richtung Nord, Ost und West. Die Kontrollzone des Salzburger Flughafens bestimmt den Luftraum der Gaisbergflieger. Das Fluggelände liegt in der CTR Salzburg, es darf nur nach Aktivierung der TRA geflogen werden. Von jedem Piloten wird ein diszipliniertes Flugverhalten und Kenntnis der Lufträume gefordert, um das schöne und einzigartige Fluggelände nicht zu gefährden. Trotz der Einschränkungen steckt im Gaisberg ein ungeahntes Potential. Im Frühjahr und Frühsommer jauchzt schon mal das ein oder andere Vario vor Freude über beachtliche Steigwerte. Auf Grund der Luftraumbeschränkungen konzentrieren sich die Streckenflüge in Richtung Süden über die Osterhorngruppe. Aber auch Flüge nach Obertraun und zurück zum Gaisberg von über 100 Kilometern wurden bereits geflogen. Abgleiter zum Landeplatz in Aigen sind fast immer drin.
