The Unterberghorn is Kössen's local mountain in Tirol's Kaiserwinkl, a pioneer paragliding site that hosted the first paragliding world championship in 1989. A gondola reaches the launches, and schools use it for high-flight training.
The Bergbahnen Kössen gondola runs from the valley station to the launches near the Bärenhütte; a single ride cost 24.50 euros in 2026. Parking at the valley station is free.
Three launches: a steep west launch (SW–W) at 1,497 m, a gentle north launch (N–NE) at 1,480 m, and a summit-ridge launch at 1,642 m (N–NE, SW–W), for practised pilots only. The main landing field at the Fliegerbar covers about three hectares.
The Unterberg is known for good thermals. The one real hazard is the Bermuda Triangle: a narrow valley on the west side with gorges, tall trees and nowhere to land, where pilots often underestimate the glide back, especially in the afternoon valley wind.
You fly at your own risk; the lift's loudspeaker announcements on launch bans, turbulence, storms or helicopter operations are binding. Keep at least 70 m from the lift cables, speedgliders are banned, and Kössen charges no launch or landing fees.
The Unterberghorn is flown all year; the gondola runs roughly May to late October in summer and December to Easter in winter, when launching is heavily restricted by ski operations.

Kössen ist zweifellos eines der Flugzentren des Gleitschirm- und Drachensport. Das Unternberghorn bietet schöne Startplätze und die Landewiese ist großzügig. Zudem gibts eine tolle Infrastruktur mit Seilbahn und der berühmten Fliegerbar von Sepp Himberger unweit des alten Doppeldeckers. In der Fliegerbar gibt es Infos zum Fluggebiet (auch Gefahrenhinweise) und jeweils aushängende aktuelle Wetterberichte. Das Gelände wird von Flugschulen für die Höhenflugausbildung genutzt. Am Wochenende ist oft viel Betrieb - besser unter der Woche. Doppelsitzerflüge bietet die Flugschule an.
